Best Candles for Family Dinners: Before, During & After the Meal

With five children, I learned very quickly that I worked faster by myself.

While I was chopping vegetables, stirring pots, and getting dinner on the table, my children were usually together in the family room. I never asked them to help much in the kitchen because, for our family, this simply worked.

When dinner was ready, we'd gather around the table.

Looking back, I don't think those evenings were really about the food.

They were about making room for one another.

The table became the place where everyone eventually came together. We talked about school, work, weekend plans, and whatever happened to be on our minds that day. We laughed, reminisced, and stayed longer than we intended.

Years later, those ordinary dinners have become some of the memories my children remember most.

Creating that kind of atmosphere doesn't require a special occasion.

Sometimes all it takes is a welcoming home, a shared meal, and time spent together.

For me, fragrance has quietly become part of preparing our home for those gatherings.

When choosing candles for family dinners, I prefer scented candles before or after the meal and unscented candlelight during dinner. This allows us to enjoy fragrance without competing with the food we've prepared.

Here are three Leveiza candles I associate with the different parts of gathering around the table.

What Are the Best Candles for a Dining Room?

The best candles for a dining room depend on when you plan to use them.

If you're setting the table for a meal, unscented candles are often the most considerate choice. They provide the warmth of candlelight without introducing fragrance that could interfere with the aromas of dinner.

Scented candles can be lovely before the meal, while you're preparing the house, or afterward when everyone has moved on to coffee and conversation.

When to enjoy it Candle Fragrance notes
Preparing for family Nurture Freesia, fig, patchouli
Kitchen preparations Nourish Pineapple, mango, coconut milk
After-dinner conversation Connect Bergamot, sage, leather
During the meal Unscented candles No added fragrance

I don't believe a dining room needs fragrance throughout the evening. Sometimes the aromas coming from the kitchen are enough.

Nurture: For the Care That Happens Before Dinner

Fragrance notes: Freesia • Fig • Patchouli

Every family meal begins long before everyone sits down.

Someone plans it.

Someone shops for it.

Someone prepares it.

Someone quietly makes sure everyone has enough.

Those acts of care often go unnoticed, but they are part of what makes a house feel like home.

Nurture combines floral freesia, fig, and earthy patchouli.

I associate this fragrance with the thoughtful preparations that go into caring for the people we love.

It's a lovely option for someone who enjoys floral fragrances with a little depth while preparing the home for family.

Choose Nurture if: You enjoy floral and earthy fragrance during the quieter preparations before a gathering.

Nourish: For the Kitchen Before Everyone Comes to the Table

Fragrance notes: Pineapple • Mango • Coconut Milk

There is something special about preparing food for people we love.

I spent so many years doing just that.

Sometimes I made elaborate meals. Other times, dinner was whatever I could get on the table between school activities and everything else that needed attention.

But the purpose was always the same.

Everyone needed to eat, and I wanted us to have that time together.

Nourish brings together pineapple, mango, and coconut milk for a bright, tropical fragrance.

It's a candle I enjoy in the kitchen at appropriate times, particularly after the cooking is done and the space has been tidied.

I don't use it to cover up cooking odors or compete with the food. I prefer to let the aromas of dinner have their place.

Choose Nourish if: You enjoy fruity, tropical fragrances as part of your kitchen routine, away from active cooking and food preparation.

Should You Use Scented Candles During Dinner?

For me, the answer is usually no.

I love scented candles, but I also love the aroma of a good meal.

When I've spent time preparing dinner, I want everyone to enjoy the food without another fragrance competing for their attention.

A strongly scented candle may interfere with how someone experiences the aromas of the meal, particularly in a smaller dining room.

If you enjoy candlelight at the table, consider unscented candles instead.

They can create a warm, inviting atmosphere without adding another fragrance.

Keep them in secure holders on stable surfaces, away from napkins, decorations, and anything flammable. Make sure they don't obstruct conversation or create a risk of being knocked over.

And if the table is crowded, there's nothing wrong with skipping candles altogether.

Good company doesn't require a centerpiece.

Connect: For the Conversations That Continue After Dinner

Fragrance notes: Bergamot • Sage • Leather

The meal eventually ends.

The conversations don't.

Someone pours another cup of coffee.

Dessert appears.

Stories continue.

No one seems to be in a hurry to leave.

Connect combines bergamot, sage, and leather into a warm, grounded fragrance.

It's a scent I enjoy when the meal is over and the evening begins to settle.

Perhaps everyone has moved into the living room, or we're still sitting together talking about things that have nothing to do with dinner.

Those are often my favorite hours.

Choose Connect if: You enjoy warm, herbal, and leathery fragrances for the quieter conversations that continue after a family meal.

How to Make Your Dining Room Feel Warm and Welcoming

A welcoming dining room doesn't require expensive furniture, perfectly matched dishes, or an elaborate table setting.

In our home, it has always been more about the people.

If you're preparing for a larger gathering, you might also enjoy my guide to the best candle scents for hosting guests and gatherings. It offers a few ideas for choosing fragrances when welcoming family and friends.

Here are a few things I've found matter most.

Make Room for Everyone

With five children, our table was rarely quiet.

There were plenty of conversations happening at once, someone needing another serving, and someone remembering something important just as dinner began.

Making room for everyone mattered more than making the table look perfect.

Let the Food Be Part of the Atmosphere

A meal has its own fragrance.

Something roasting in the oven. A pot simmering on the stove. Fresh bread or rice ready to serve.

I don't think those familiar aromas need to be replaced by a scented candle.

They're part of what makes a house feel like home.

Choose Comfortable Lighting

A dining room can feel inviting with something as simple as softer lighting.

A lamp or appropriately placed unscented candles can create warmth without making the table feel overly formal.

Keep Fragrance Comfortable for Everyone

If you enjoy a scented candle before or after the meal, choose one that suits the space and consider the preferences of the people sharing it.

Not everyone enjoys fragrance in the same way.

A welcoming home should feel comfortable for guests, too.

Allow the Conversation to Continue

Some of our best family conversations have happened long after the plates were cleared.

I don't think there's any need to rush those evenings.

Sometimes the nicest thing we can offer one another is simply more time together.

Are Scented Candles Safe to Use in a Dining Room?

Scented candles can be enjoyed in a dining room when used responsibly, but the placement matters.

Keep candles away from food preparation, table linens, decorations, and other flammable materials.

Use a stable, heat-resistant surface where they cannot easily be knocked over.

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

For Leveiza candles, trim the cooled wick to approximately ¼ inch and follow the recommended maximum burning session of 3–4 hours.

Extinguish the candle before leaving the room.

For more practical guidance, see our Journal article on how to burn a scented candle properly and safely.

The Dinners We Remember

Family dinners don't have to be elaborate.

Some evenings it's a homemade meal. Other nights it's takeout shared around the table.

What people remember isn't whether everything was perfect.

They remember how they felt.

A welcoming home isn't created by beautiful dishes or carefully planned decorations.

It's created by the people around the table.

When I think about the years of raising our children, I don't remember every meal I prepared.

But I remember us being together.

The meals may change.

The menu may change.

The people around the table may grow older.

But gathering together never goes out of style.
