How to Choose Long-Lasting Scented Candles
Share
A candle becomes familiar through the hours we spend with it.
At my desk, while reading, or when the house has finally grown quiet, I want a fragrance I enjoy returning to. I also want to know what to expect from the candle and how to care for it.
When choosing long-lasting scented candles, begin with the stated burn time, the amount of wax, and the care instructions. Then consider whether the fragrance suits the space where you will use it.
The longest burn time alone does not tell you which candle you will enjoy most. Here is what I would look for.
Which candles last the longest?
There is no single wax type or candle category that always lasts the longest. Burn time depends on the complete candle, including its wax, wick, size, and how it is used.
A larger candle may contain more wax, but it may also have several wicks that consume that wax more quickly. The size of the vessel alone is not enough to judge longevity.
Compare the manufacturer's estimated burn time alongside the net wax weight and number of wicks. Look for clear product information rather than assuming that a higher price or a particular wax guarantees more hours.
Understand what “up to” burn time means
An estimated burn time describes the total hours of use across several burning sessions. It does not mean the candle should remain lit continuously for that length of time.
“Up to 50 hours,” for example, is an estimate rather than a promise that every candle will burn for exactly 50 hours. Wick maintenance, drafts, and the length of each session can affect the experience.
Always follow the candle's care instructions and stop using it at the recommended remaining wax level. Using every last drop of wax is not the goal.
Look beyond the wax name
Wax is an important part of a candle, but it works together with the wick, fragrance, and vessel.
At Leveiza, we use a blend of soy, coconut, and apricot wax with cotton wicks. You can find the wax blend, net weight, and estimated burn time in The Essentials section of our product pages.
When comparing candles, look for that same clarity. Knowing what you are buying is more useful than relying on broad descriptions such as “premium” or “luxury.”
Consider fragrance as well as burn time
Burn time and fragrance strength describe different things.
Burn time tells you approximately how long you can use the candle. Scent throw describes how its fragrance travels through a space while it is burning.
The size and layout of your room, airflow, and your own fragrance preferences influence what feels right. A scent you enjoy in a smaller room may feel different in an open living area.
I begin with the fragrance notes I enjoy and where I plan to light the candle. At my desk, that might be something fresh. In the evening, I may want a softer fragrance.
A candle is worth returning to when you enjoy the time spent with it.
Three Leveiza candles for different parts of your day
Aspire, Unwind, and Celebrate each have a listed estimated burn time of up to 50 hours. Choose between them according to the fragrance and the setting, rather than expecting one to last longer than the others.
Aspire combines lemon, jasmine, and driftwood. It is the candle I reach for when I sit down to work on Leveiza or give my attention to an idea.
Unwind brings bergamot, tea blossom, and musk. I choose it when the house grows quiet and I am ready to settle into the evening.
Celebrate offers champagne, berries, and tangerine. Its brighter fragrance suits birthdays, family gatherings, and occasions we are happy to share.
How to help your candle burn evenly
A few simple habits can help you get more enjoyment from your candle.
Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before each burn, once the candle has cooled. Remove the trimmings and keep the wax free of debris.
For Leveiza candles, allow the wax to melt across the surface on the first burn, while staying within the recommended session limit. Burn no longer than 3–4 hours at a time. Do not keep burning beyond that limit just to reach the edges.
Place the candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface away from drafts and anything that could catch fire. Keep it away from children and pets, and never leave it burning unattended.
Let the candle cool before moving it or lighting it again. Stop using it when about ½ inch of wax remains.
If you notice a deep hollow around the wick with wax left along the sides, our guide to preventing candle tunneling explains what may be happening.
Can you make candle fragrance last after extinguishing it?
You may notice some fragrance after extinguishing a candle, but how long it remains varies with the scent, room, and ventilation.
A candle's stated burn time is not a promise of fragrance lasting for that many hours after the flame is out.
Enjoy the fragrance while the candle is safely burning, and extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep.
Choose a candle you will enjoy returning to
For me, value is found in use.
A candle that accompanies several quiet evenings, hours of creative work, or gatherings around the table becomes part of everyday life.
Choose a fragrance you enjoy, check the product details, and give the candle the care it needs. Those small decisions help you make the most of the hours it offers.
