How to Prevent Candle Tunneling and Get a More Even Burn

There is something especially satisfying about lighting a new candle for the first time.

The wax is smooth, the wick is freshly trimmed, and the vessel has not yet collected any signs of use. Then, after a few burns, you may notice a narrow hollow forming around the wick while a ring of untouched wax remains along the sides.

This is known as candle tunneling.

It can shorten the life of a candle, weaken the fragrance experience, and leave behind wax that never has the opportunity to melt. Fortunately, a little care—especially during the first few burns—can help a candle burn more evenly.

What Is Candle Tunneling?

Candle tunneling happens when the wax melts mainly around the wick instead of gradually melting across the surface.

As the candle continues to burn, the wick settles deeper into the center. The surrounding wax remains along the sides, creating what looks like a tunnel.

A short burn is one of the most common reasons this happens. If a candle is extinguished before the melt pool has had enough time to widen, it may continue following that narrower pattern during future burns.

Tunneling can also result from a wick that is not well suited to the vessel or wax. But when a candle has been properly tested, the way it is burned at home still matters.

Give the First Burn Enough Time

The first burn helps establish how the candle will melt during the burns that follow.

Allow the wax to melt evenly across most of the surface before extinguishing the flame. Depending on the candle, this may take two to four hours.

There is no need to wait until every trace of wax at the edge has disappeared. A small amount may remain during the earliest burns and catch up as the candle burns farther down.

What matters is giving the melt pool enough time to widen instead of extinguishing the candle after only a few minutes.

I try not to light a new candle unless I know I will be in the room long enough to enjoy it safely.

Avoid Very Short Burns

Lighting a candle for only fifteen or twenty minutes may provide a little fragrance, but it usually does not allow the wax to melt evenly.

If this happens repeatedly, the center can begin burning lower while wax accumulates around the edges.

When I know I have only a short time, I wait and light the candle another day. A candle is better enjoyed when there is enough time to let it burn properly without rushing.

At the same time, never burn a candle for more than four hours at once. Longer burns can cause the wick to grow too long, the flame to become unstable, and the vessel to become excessively hot.

Ceiling fans, air vents, open windows, and frequently used doorways can cause the flame to flicker or lean to one side.

An uneven flame may create an uneven melt pool. It can also produce smoke or soot along the vessel.

Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from moving air, curtains, papers, and other flammable objects. Keep it where you can see it, and never leave it burning unattended.

Let the Candle Cool Completely

After extinguishing the flame, allow the wax to cool and become firm before moving or relighting the candle.

Moving a candle while the wax is liquid can shift the wick away from the center. Relighting it too soon can also interfere with the way the wax resets between burns.

Once the candle is cool, check that the wick remains centered and upright before the next use.
